FEMA EMI Courses active again<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For any Ohio District 3 ARES members who have been working on\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>FEMA Emergency Management Institute Independent Study<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0courses, the school has reopened for at least three weeks.\u00a0 They are rapidly catching up on their course completion certificate backlog, and you can safely submit course exams for credit again at\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><u><b><a href=\"http:\/\/training.fema.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training.fema.gov<\/a><\/b><\/u><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of January\u2019s EMI residential courses have been cancelled due to the shutdown, while others are postponed until later in the year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A second shutdown in just over two weeks is still a strong possibility, so I recommend that any hams who haven\u2019t completed IS-100, 200, 700 and 800 use the time we\u2019re spending indoors this winter to wrap those courses up.\u00a0 And don\u2019t forget to share your course completion certificates with your County EC, District EC and with the Section EC at\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><u><b><a href=\"http:\/\/arrl.volunteerhub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<b>23<\/b><sup><b>rd<\/b><\/sup><b>\u00a0Annual Severe Weather Symposium<\/b>\u00a0is now scheduled for Thursday, March 28<sup>th<\/sup>, 2019 in the\u00a0<b>US Bank Conference Theater<\/b>\u00a0at the\u00a0<b>Ohio Union<\/b>, 1739 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio.\u00a0 Historically this event has been held on a Friday, and the club apologizes in advance to anyone upset by the break in tradition.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This free event runs from 9 AM through 5 PM and always features interesting speakers on a variety of severe weather topics.\u00a0 Past presenters have included well-known broadcast meteorologists, important weather researchers and National Weather Service staffers from Wilmington, Cleveland, Indianapolis, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This symposium is not a substitute for either your local SkyWarn training or the regional advanced SkyWarn training in Cincinnati this year.\u00a0 But if you just can\u2019t get enough severe weather then this event is for you.\u00a0 For further Nuclear and Radiological Events<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Greetings once again from Clark County, Ohio, which is now celebrating 20 consecutive days without a tornado!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This morning the\u00a0<b>West Central Ohio Regional Public Health Departments<\/b>\u00a0conducted a half day exercise,\u00a0<b>Nuclear Winter Blues<\/b>, designed to prepare these agencies to handle a major radiological emergency.\u00a0 Just as this exercise wrapped up the federal\u00a0<b>Center for Disease Control<\/b>\u00a0offered a one hour webinar called \u201c<b>Communication for a Nuclear or Radiological Disaster<\/b>\u201d. learned a few things that apply to our recent severe weather event.\u00a0 With thousands of Miami Valley residents impacted by the Memorial Day tornado outbreak, an epidemic of mental illness is likely to emerge soon.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Illnesses such as depression and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Post Traumatic Stress Private Go Kit<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many of us have an amateur radio go kit ready for local emergencies, but how many of you also have a second go kit with the personal items that you might need for a week or so?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of my strongest disaster memories was of the North Dakota police officer who dropped everything to respond to a flood halfway across his state.\u00a0 He arrived with three sets of underwear, only to discover that the loss of the city water supply meant that there was no hot water available to launder the two sets he wasn\u2019t wearing. \u00a0That was fine for the first week, but he was there for several.\u00a0 On top of that, the town was evacuated and there were no stores open to buy more.\u00a0 When I met him during week two he was already pretty unhappy.\u00a0 The overtime he earned did not make up for the chafing he experienced.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pack your private go kit with all the socks and undies you might need, as well as protein bars, peanut butter jars, snacks, heater meals, all meds you need, water purifiers, a space blanket, etc.\u00a0 While disaster operations work hard to get food and clean water to everyone, it sometimes takes several days to organize that.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And keep your eye on Florida this weekend.\u00a0 Things are about to, if you\u2019ll pardon the expression, go south there in a hurry with the approach of a major hurricane.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Submitted by Michael Schulsinger, N8QHV.<a id=\"Week-19\"><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">19. If you are unable to help directly, consider donating financially to one of the many legitimate charities shifting funds to the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the southeast coast of the United States.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The American Red Cross and its worldwide partners are helping in all of the areas mentioned.\u00a0You can make payments through their websites or via your local Red Cross offices. Many religious organizations are sending resources as well.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Veterans may not be aware that\u00a0some veterans organizations have disaster funds to assist members and posts that suffer disaster losses. For example, this week I donated to the American Legion disaster fund.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This list just scratches the surface. But before you donate to an organization check them out through Charity Navigator. Emergency Kit on a Budget<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throughout the month of September, which is\u00a0<b>National Preparedness Month<\/b>, the\u00a0<b>Ohio Emergency Management Agency<\/b>\u00a0Facebook page has been running a series of articles entitled\u00a0<b>Building a Kit $1 at a Time \u2013 Building an Emergency Preparedness Kit on a Budget<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many ARES members, including yours truly, now have fixed incomes, so this series has some validity for us.\u00a0Actually, some of the advice given is valid for everyone, so if you have access to Facebook take a look at the Ohio EMA page entries for September.
