which means it\u2019s time for me to hype the 22nd Annual Severe Weather Symposium.\u00a0 Sponsored by the Meteorology Club at The Ohio State University, this annual event is free and open to all ages.\u00a0\u00a0Presenters cover a wide variety of severe weather topics.\u00a0\u00a0Some are quite general and easy to follow, while others are highly technical scientific research.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1517248386600_4283\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">This year\u2019s symposium is scheduled for Friday, March 9, 2018 from 9AM to 5 PM.\u00a0 The location is the US Bank Conference Theater, Ohio Union, 1739 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio.\u00a0\u00a0Parking can be an issue, so the recommended option is the South Garage.\u00a0 Located just north of the Ohio Union, it offers 800 visitor spaces at $13 for the entire day.\u00a0 Attendees may pack a lunch, dine within the Union or eat at one of several nearby restaurants.\u00a0 In addition to these expenses, there are usually a few symposium related goodies available for Disaster Information Specialization Certificates<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As many of you know I\u2019m always searching for free disaster training.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never find\u00a0all\u00a0opportunities, but it\u2019s fun to try.\u00a0 My most\u00a0recent\u00a0find is the non-profit\u00a0Medical Library Association.<\/p>\n<p>While the\u00a0MLA\u00a0may not be the first organization you think of when the topic of\u00a0disasters arises, they are taking their potential roles in emergencies seriously enough to generate a pair of\u00a0Disaster Information Specialization\u00a0certificates.\u00a0 These certificates are intended\u00a0for library professionals and disaster workforce paid and volunteer staff, which would\u00a0include ARES members.\u00a0 According to the MLA site, there\u00a0are\u00a0currently only about sixty-five\u00a0holders of these certificates.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Basic\u00a0level requires completing\u00a0five online courses, including the current IS-100.b and IS-700.a FEMA\u00a0courses\u00a0we\u2019ve harped on\u00a0for years.\u00a0 The\u00a0Advanced\u00a0certificate requires an additional twelve hours of online training.\u00a0 While the courses are free, certification involves a $55 to $75\u00a0fee.\u00a0 Once certified there is a continuing education requirement of eight contact hours every three years.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more, visit the MLS website at\u00a0www.mlsnet.org\/page\/disaster-information-specialization\u00a0.<a id=\"Week-8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8.
